Andy's Luke ANH Force FX Review, with pics!

We come to it at last: the release of one of the most hotly anticipated Force FX lightsabers ever, and the one that has perhaps more than any other been shrouded in mystery since its announcement: the Luke Skywalker Episode IV: A New Hope lightsaber. This was the very first lightsaber introduced to moviegoers exactly thirty years ago...the original.

Aside from a few typically nondescript promo pics on Master Replicas website, little information has been given about this saber, and what little bits we've had have often conflicted with one another. How fat is the hilt? Is it a retooled ESB or a retooled Anakin, or a totally new hilt? What batteries does it take?

The Luke ANH -- potentially Master Replicas' final Force FX saber -- has finally arrived, and all of your questions are about to be answered.

IN THE BOX

Sliding the slender box out of its cardboard packaging, we find a design similar to recent sabers like the Obi-Wan ROTS and Yoda. No surprises here. The box is just as slim as those for the Anakin ROTS and other recent sabers.

OUT OF THE BOX

Upon opening the box and removing the Luke ANH from its customary styrofoam coccoon, many of our lingering questions about the saber are answered at last.

The hilt features a very handsome brushed aluminum finish which is quite different from the chromed finish of the Anakin ROTS, and more accurately gives the appearance of a vintage Graflex. It is very lightweight: about on par with the Anakin ROTS.

FIT AND FINISH

The Luke ANH immediately feels more elegant and refined than the Anakin ROTS, featuring most all of the fine details and nuances of a Graflex hilt that were missing from the Anakin. As I mentioned, the Luke ANH hilt features a brushed aluminum finish, which doesn't show fingerprints nearly as badly as the Anakin: a major plus. There are some parts of the hilt that are chromed; namely, the emitter ring, the "rabbit ear", and the activation box.

The clamp, which looked almost a completely different color in MR's stock photos, has a slightly duller finish than the body, but is just different enough to provide a little contrast, and looks very nice. It features the well known Graflex accent lines around the clamp (though not the GRAFLEX branding itself, of course):

Here are some more images showing off this saber's detail (including the "glass" lens and red "button"), and its brushed metal finish:

You'll note a few things from the picture above. First, the saber does feature the gap between the emitter ring and the hilt, so when the blade is activated, it shines through: a detail many of us missed on the Anakin ROTS. You'll also notice that some black plastic has still been added inside the emitter to make the blade sturdier, so the Luke ANH is not quite as Graflex-accurate as the Luke ESB was. In fact, the emitter ring and the rabbit ear are not actually one piece on this saber, as you can see below:

Overall, I love the detail on this saber compared with the Anakin ROTS, which felt very fake-Graflex to me when I first got it.

HILT SIZE

This is the big one we've all been wondering: is this saber actually a retooled Luke ESB saber, making it fatter than more recent sabers? I am here to tell you this IS NOT the case. The Luke ANH has the same girth as the Anakin ROTS. I only had my other two sabers to compare it to -- the Vader ESB and the Maul -- but in the following image you can clearly see their relative size:

The Luke ANH is the same width as the Vader ESB, and only slightly wider than the Maul. The three sabers are lined up at the pommel in that image, so you can also see the length of the Luke ANH's hilt compared with the other two.

BATTERIES

Master Replicas 2007 baby! As you can see, the battery cover actually screws in flush with the end of the hilt. The only way to unscrew it is by grabbing the D-ring and twisting.

Let the issue be put to rest here and now: The Luke ANH takes 3 AA batteries...not AAA, as MR's site continues to suggest.

POWER ON!

The Luke ANH saber is activated by sliding the LED bubble strip toward the emitter, just like the Vader sabers.

Light
Upon activation, you are greeted with a very bright blue blade. It's the same blue as the Obi-Wan ROTS, and not cyan, as I had been hoping. However, this is easy to forgive when a blade looks this good. It's just as bright and evenly lit as the Obi-Wan, and is a big improvement over the Anakin ROTS in this regard. The dark spot in the middle is visible, but the rest of the blade is very even, and the only way to see splotches is to stare at the blade and look for them.

Sound and Motion
Upon activation you are greeted with Old Faithful: the same tried-and-true MR Jedi sound package. The speaker and sound quality is about as good/bad as you've come to expect from all of MR's sabers. Some may be disappointed by the recycling, once again, of the same old Jedi sounds, but I'm sure most of us expected no different.

However, it must be said that I am IN LOVE with this saber's motion detection, particularly its clash sensor. Unlike every other FX saber I've owned, the Luke ANH's clash sounds can be set off almost every time with merely a light tap of the blade on an outstretched palm. Yet it's also not oversensitive: I have never set the clash off unless I wanted to. Swing sounds also go off very fluidly. This saber's motion sensing is about as good as you can hope to get with a Force FX.

CONCLUSION

As an owner of the Anakin ROTS, I was somewhat disappointed with several aspects of it: the blade was splotchy, the details (or lack thereof) weren't appealing, there were several plastic pieces from which paint rubbed off easily, and the chrome finish was hard to keep clean. The Luke ANH addresses all of those issues, and improves on the Anakin in every way. Even now I keep looking over to stare at it, it's so beautiful -- finally we get an FX saber with Graflex detailing and without the fat body of the ESB! Also, the light and sound quality are about as good as any of MR's best sabers.

In short, Master Replicas has a winner on their hands here. If you've been on the fence about this saber, pick it up! You won't regret it, and as one of Master Replicas' final FX sabers (perhaps THE final one if they don't get the Dooku and/or Obi TPM released), it represents the very best of what they have to offer.

I said that this saber may end up knocking the Anakin ROTS out of the spot for King of the FX Graflex styled sabers and it looks like that is indeed the case.

This may very well be the best FX Jedi saber MR has made yet.

Well if the Yoda FX was any indication of when I will finally get my Luke from MR,I don`t think I will have one in hand for about another week or 2.
They ship from NJ and I'm in Los Angeles.
So everyone close to NJ is getting theirs soon like Master Andy did..

But when I do I will do a video of the Luke AHN vs Ani and Luke ESB..
That will put the rest what sabers out of the 3 is the kind of the graflex type Force Fx..
I looks forward to bringing that to you all..

I didn't catch an answer to one more question I had, though it may have been mentioned and i just passed it up. Is it still hard for right handed people to use lik Anakin's ROTS is? Or am i the only one who thought that the power button was in the way on that saber? Everytime i tried to swing it, my wrist would hit the button turning it off.

How can anyone now want those 2 sabers as well.

I don`t see how ANYONE can turn down this Luke.
The Anakin was the king of the Force fx for 2 years now,but it have just been knocked out the box but this lovely new blue Luke.
I think the blue blades have the most shock and awe value of the MR sabers,and a graflex hilt that looks like a real graflex OMG.
I can`t WAIT to get mine..

Well the power switch on this saber is the LED bubble strip -- just like on the Vader sabers -- rather than the "latch" on the side of the box, like the Anakin had. The bubble strip has more resistance when slid on or off, so I'd say you'll have a good bit fewer accidental shutoffs with this saber.

Now that's what I call a review! Thank you very much Brother Andy you have brought joy and light to many hearts! I pre-ordered this saber as soon as I first saw it but began to develop a few doubts about the design and spin-ability of this hilt. After reading and seeing your review.... I can't wait to hold and power up this elegant and special saber. It looks so nice that I don't know if I can bring myself to crash it against my other sabers and instead keep as a display and demo piece only to keep it clean and pristine! Might have to go for two of these!

Maybe we should start a "Poor Starving Jedi/Sith Fund"...
or how about a counseling/support group for saber-addicts

?
I will also contribute some pictures and video when mine comes in as well, God-willing.

I only thought about one thing when I saw it : It will be AMAZING to have that one converted by Ultrasabers

The hilt is so close to the real graflex, that having it on a belt with the possibility of adding a blade is just awesome... 8-)

Hell yeah,convert this baby to a cyan Lux V Ultrasabers and you got a real ULTRAsaber..

I did the next best thing though,I'm converting my Vader Anh Fx to a Anakin EP2 with blue LuxV with ultrasabers..

Anyways I have read this review about 40 times already today,dam I want this Luke Fx already ..

Looks amazing! I recently jumped on the FX Bandwagon then a week later MR announced this would be the last year. Should be an expensive year for me.

I was gonna hunt down a Anakin but this review has definitely sold me on the Luke. This will be my 2nd fx saber after Darth Vader 2007 ANH. Perfect companions

Glad you guys are liking the review! I have to say I'm more and more enchanted by this saber the more I play around with it. It's a truly beautiful piece. The only thing about it I'd change is the milled knobs that house the glass eye and the red button, as these are plastic, and the only plastic pieces in the saber from which paint could potentially wear off. It makes me wonder about the potential of replacing them with replica parts...

Between this saber and my Luke ROTJ Luxeon V with UltraSound which will hopefully be in my hands very soon, I'll need fear no Sith!

not much I can say that would add to the review but here are a couple of extra pics showing relative size to other FX's. as you can see the Luke FX is the smallest of all the ones shown (except Yoda). its easily 10% smaller than the luke ESB and although the hilt is a wee bit fatter than the anakin in diameter, its roughly 1/2cm shorter than the anakin in length.

also you can't tell from the pics but the blade appears brighter than anakin or obiwan; its about the same brightness as the luke ESB.

Man I want this saber so bad, but the only way I could get it is through Target.com. They don't have it! But they do have the Yoda (which I had originally planned to get AFTER the Luke ANH).

as near as I can tell its exactly the same blade as the obiwan.

Yes, it's more or less the exact same blade as the Obi-wan. But the blade is still extremely bright...certainly brighter than the Anakin ROTS.

Also, don't forget: the Yoda is only brighter because it's a smaller blade with the same number of LEDs, and the Maul is only thicker because the regular blades would flex too much when swinging them around as a double saber.

My Maul's are as bright as my Vader's witch is very wierd ......... I think thats why the batteries drane in only 20 minits...................( hope the blades dont explode :-X

My Maul is so dim it's not even funny! I don't know what the deal is. My Luke will light up an entire room at night, the Maul only lights about a couple of inches around it. (Another reason why I like my Luke over my Maul).

Anyways, this thread is about the Luke ANH so we should keep it that way.

My Luke ANH 2007 arrived yesterday.
It's such a beautiful piece of craftmanship, and it's lighter than the Luke ROTJ that was the lightest saber ever made by MR.

My favorite jedi saber ever, even if i had preferred an heavier hilt 'cause i'm more proficient with.

You mentioned your converting an MR to a Lux V. Are you waiting for the Ultrasound-or can you fit a LuxV driver in with the MR board (for sound). You must be going silent-or waiting for the Ultraboard?

I'm waiting on the sound board.
My saber is already shipped to Ultra,but it wont be sent mack to me until their sound boards are in.
I hope this is middle of next month.
But no matter how long,I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

My mistake, this is the saber I have. Originally a Parksaber EL, I have everything to convert it to a K2 with relay Luxeon. I would like to have the battery hooked up to the recharge post and make it functional. I love this saber, I had my wedding pics redone with lightsabers on here. The saber I'm holding was made from plumbing pipe modeled after this.

You should probably start out with a full size one that's comfortable to hold. I think the Luke ROTJ or Obi-Wan ROTS would be great sabers to start off your collection because they are very comfortable to hold. Then, you could consider a Yoda.

i love that lightsaber, one of my favorties next to Obi Wan, but i have a question, if this is true is Hasbro making a Count Dooku lightsaber, please someone let me know...
