Lol, real lightsabers are coming. I can sense it now. I'll be the first one to test it out, lol. I don't think the government would be-able to keep them secret. People will probably get them through the black market if anything. They'll use the same method that militia use to get machine guns.

If you believe, it will happen. Science has no real laws compared to the power and mystery of the Force.

the closest thing we could probably think up would look more like a hacksaw than a sword, persay.
an example would be like in the game No More Heroes for the Wii.
If anybody played System Shock 2, there's a lightsaber you can get in there too, but it's not nearly as powerful as what's in the Star Wars movies. It presents a fun idea though, it's a beam that charges Ions directly in the line of sight beyond the emitter, creating more of a swath of supercharged plasma energy at a fixed distance. Powering such a device would require something like....a nuke station in the handle. no prob.....

ok so new to the forum but personally, I am not new to this discussion. I have had it in real life many times. First off let me say this. Once, I dedicated a few weeks, to trying to figure out means as to making a real lightsaber with current techonology. Only once, did I ever get close. However, with the techonology of today, we cannot hold the blade in place, and it the energy just shoots out everywhere as soon as you turn the blade on. I didn't actually do that, but thats what would happen if I had the resources.
We would need something to maintain the blade. A sort of invisible force, to maintain the energy within a blade like shape. Now, in the games, they say there is a stone, or a crystal, that goes into the blades hilt. Maybe that crystal, is what contains what we need. It could have certain properties yet to be discovered by us.
As far as the laws of Physics. They can be broken, it isn't impossible. Nothing is. If you close your mind and aren't open to anything, then it would seem as if it was impossible, but thats just because your being difficult. Think about it. How many lights are in the sky at night? How many stars? Planets? We are just 1! Who knows what is out there. We don't have the ability to confidently say, or prove, that out of all planets in existance, that we are the only living things. So with that being said, you never know when an alien like race from somewhere else could arrive here at our planet. They might be evil and wipe us out. They might be good and share technology with us. It could happen in our life time, it could happen tommorow, it might never happen.
They are all possibilities, but still yet, nothing is impossible. You never know, and you cannot say for sure that Physics cannot be broken, if we yet ourselves, have not existed nearly as long as the planet or anything else in space for that matter. So basicly, its controversial, but to me its just a no brainer. We cannot prove we are the only things in existance. So therefore, anything is possible. More life outside of Earth. If there is more life, maybe they have more advanced technology, maybe they don't. But we just don't know, and we cannot make an educated decision on saying it is impossible and we are all that exists, when we ourselves are not advanced enough to go out and study everything that is beyond our skies for ourselves.

The first place you will find them will be the black market? Thats like saying the first nuclear bomb was sold on the black market. Or the first Space shuttle was on the black market.
Yes things are leaked to the Black Market but not something that would be considered the leading edge of technology. Which is why the majority of the weapons on the Black market are still old russian AK-47s and RPGs.
You wont see a saber as depicted in StarWars. You will likely see our best attempt in our lifetime even, it will most likely look like a plasma hacksaw.
Breaking a few minor laws of physics is one thing, completely defying reality is another.

You will likely see our best attempt in our lifetime even, it will most likely look like a plasma hacksaw. Breaking a few minor laws of physics is one thing, completely defying reality is another. Only if you really honestly think that what we percieve as reality is truly reality. Like i said before, to me, I think that we just don't know what is out there in the universe. So you never know what could happen. You might wake up in the morning and there is an alien race now on earth eating people. Or helping us. And they might give us technology and then next week we have lightsabers. Who knows. There are just way to many planets and systems out there for us to say for sure that in our lifetime, none of them can find us, help us, and then end up with real ones. But thats just my opinion, not saying yours or anyone else is wrong, Im just voicing my opinion. ;D I like this topic, lol finally I found a forum about something I love and can hear other peoples thoughts on things I always think about

This is off-topic, Will, but what you're speaking of is the hypothesis of relativity, basically stating that everything is relative and that if you believe something enough it is true. Try walking into a wall you believe is an illusion, you'll get a nasty surprise and a failed philosophy.
Back to the lightsabers, though, the laws of physics are pretty much set in stone for now. You're correct, they can change, but for now they're not. Lightsabers are most likely not going to happen in our generation, if ever.

Now if only we could time travel into the future and find out. I'd time travel 1000 years into the future to get a real lightsaber, then bring the lightsaber back to this time. ;D
