Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and just got myself into the whole lightsabers stuff lol. Got addicted after watching YouTube Fan Films. I was very impressed with Ryan W's work and am interested in getting into this myself. I have Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere 6.5, Adobe Premiere Pro 7.0 and, of course, Adobe After Effects 6 (I think it's 6 anyway). I have had a look at Kit Fisto's Lightsaber tutorial and it would seem to be the easiest to follow, in my opinion. Just got one question though: Whenever I use the Brush Tool, I hold Shift and Click at the base and end of my prop BUT it doesn't draw the blade. It only leaves 2 dots where I clicked. Are there any settings I've missed in the Brush Tools? Help please. Thanks
Gibbon

Without holding shift down, click on either the base or tip of your lightsaber blade (personally I like to start the base). Then, hold down shift and click on the other end of the blade. This should draw a straight line. After that, release the shift key.

Just tried clicking first before holding shift but it still doesn't work. Anything else I'm missing?

I just tried it in AE 6.5 Pro and it still works fine. You may be missing a step in Kit's tutorial. For one, you cannot draw on the original layer which is the video itself.

I'll go over it again in more detail but I don't think I missed anything. I found Ryan's Tutorial which, personally, I've found to be the most useful so far. He explains everything very clearly and shows you exactly what he's doing so I've had a go using his method. Seems to be working very well! Only it's more time consuming but I've got time to waste so I don't mind. Thanks for the help all the same.

Look up (Google) "Open source" software, you might also put in After effects after it (i.e. "Free, Open Source, After Effects" or "Open Source special effects" or something like that). You will find some stuff for what you are looking for.

You can use photo shop if you convert the video file into a film strip (a bunch of images) but I recomend you get after effects instead it will be a lot easier. Don't get me wrong photoshoped sabers look great I use that for stills all the time but for video it would just take way to long to be practical.

Quick question folks: In AE 6.5, is there a reasonably simple way to add the tapered point to the end of the saber blade (that we see in RotS)? If so, I would be most grateful for some pointers either as to how to do it, or where a tutorial that has this tip, may be found. Many thanks in advance either way! ;D

Right... As you've guessed, I'm a rookie when it comes to this kind of thing. Thanks for the patience! ;D I manage ok with Photoshop but working with video is something else again!
