i have a few things to well, slightly correct in here. you are correct about powering the saber...that is well nigh impossible with current tech unless you had a backpack battery or something of the like. even then, it would run out incredibly quickly. about the laser weapons, such as blasters, it is possible. what powered them was basically excitable gas. power was routed through this, then focused through a lens. this produced a laser beam, not unlike those seen currently. the difference was, the laser had such a high concentration of energy that it would almost instantaneously vaporize the liquid within a person, expending its energy, and leaving a burn mark. about it going on forever, you are correct. but it loses enough of its cohesion after a while to not be lethal, or to not do anything. lightsabers are created with a flux field, drawing the energy back into them, a loop. so it is possible, though unprobable. Ahh, someone with some actual technical knowledge for a change, always good to see. I agree, the Sabers are a very long way off from ever being in the same realm as their movie counterparts. But the Blasters are here now, and getting more compact all the time. Take our country's Strategic Defense Initiative, aka the "Star Wars Defense System" for instance. A plane mounted laser and power station, capable of incinerating incoming missiles at long range in a matter of seconds. They use a deuterium fluoride laser to power it though i believe. But through the readily availible power of common cutting lasers...foremost generally being of the Carbon Dioxide or Argon-Ion variety...everyday people could easily make their own lesser versions. If you really want to see a fun site on the matter, i highly recommend checking out WickedLasers.com, as they make these sweet handheld super laser pointers that are capable of cutting and burning holes through a variety of mediums. They are actually pretty cheap too, with the high end models they offer being between 1000-3500, depending on the color of laser you want...as blue beam technology costs much more than the green.

[glow=red,2,300] if the laser is invisble or not who cares? you can't see a bullet either when you shoot it right? so invisble lasers make sense.
we have lasers guns, but we won't see them for at least 10+ years the soonest.
stuff like this isn't seen by the public.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION: The reason that we don't have any real Lightsabers on this planet is because we have lost the ability to use and sense the force. If you search the lore you will find that each Jedi had to create his or her own lightsaber. I see a lightsaber as a sort of sword. The difference between a sword and a lightsaber is that a sword only has two edges. A lightsaber has infinite edges. If you look at lightsabers as metaphors for religion: Sword = 2 edges, truth and lies, can be nearly 2 dimensional, metal, man-made. "I'll take s-words for 500 alex" -SNL These are characteristics of the religions of our planet. To create a lightsaber is to create a new religion. Lightsaber: infinite edges, 3 dimensional, pure light, a song that knows when to stop. A lightsaber has infinite edges because it spreads the love in every direction...I don't want to get off on a rant here but...if you want a lightsaber...become one with the universe, learn about the force, love it all or hate it all. The mild are on the silent screen. By the way...I am not a Jedi...I just make music. www.myspace.com/thescribtonesband

it would be impossible to make a LIGHT saber, light spreads and never stops untill it hits a nonreflective surface. if you hit a reflective surface with the light saber the beam would bounce back and fry you

Well me and some others discuss this alot besides the obvious like Lightsabers. But the other one we debate is "Laser Weapons" in real life. I say lasers in real life are invisible. They disagree, I guess laser pens don't count as. Also they say lasers aren't deadly, I say it depends! I laser pen can't kill you! But there are betters ones I'd imagine, I am not into lasers really. The last thing is I say since they are invisble they would make stupid weapons. Can you imagine seeing 100 guys in a battle shooting guns with invisble lasers.... no comment. What do you guys think about "Laser Weapons". Invisble? Deadly? Plausible? Why do you feel you would have to see the laser for it to be a weapon? War isn't about how dumb 100 guys shooting invisible laser would look, it about the lasers ability to kill. Besides tracer rounds, can you see the bullits as these 100 guys shoot each other? Laser guns will probably exist long before (if ever) lightsabers. Unless the weilder wear a radiation suit and lugs around the 500 lb power unit with a cord attached to the saber.
