I picked myself one of these up last year, when I stumbled across the fact that there had a been a batch, (more than one batch?) of figures produced with this variation.
I decided to buy one to keep as a bit of an investment. Given the fact I am used collect and play with the original vintage figures as a kid and never even dreamed of keeping them in mint condition, I am completely new to the collecting lark. As such, I don't know whether I have in fact picked up a rarity, or whether the Palpatine figure is more widespread than I originally thought, (when I first saw the figure, it was for sale on a US toy store website for over $200 - I got mine for approx £18.00).
Can anyone help?

Cool - thats not bad. I was beginning to think that there were loads of them out there, as shortly after I got mine, there seemed to be sellers on ebay with job lots of them.
Still, I think I'll hold onto mine for a bit now - problem is, the longer I have it, the harder it'll be to sell it later on - LOL. Ah well, a nice problem to have anyway !

I'm probably not the best person to ask, but I'm guessing that there was a batch of figures where I suppose someone in quality control or something didn't realise the Sith use red sabers, and let a bunch of Palpatines go out with blue sabers instead.
I'd be interested to know the real reason myself if anyone knows...

I have an Anakin Skywalker ROTS action figure and it has a blue Anakin saber and a Red Dooku saber. I have since found out that the red Dooku saber was not supposed to be in there and it was supposed to be Darth Vader's saber, so hopefully that would be worth quite a bit in the future. Does anyone else know more about this?

i can solve the mystery of why it is blue, when they filmed Revenge of the Sith the scene where Palpatine fights mace went like this.
Mace and Anakin confront Palpatine some dialogue is exchanged and then tempers flare and Palpatines force summons Anakins Saber and uses it against Mace which is why Palpatine was originally sold with Anakin's blue saber.

That also explains as to why Anakin has the Red lightsaber that comes with his figure.
He was originally supposed to have a Red saber, but they didn't have it go that way because if we all Remember Palpatine lost his saber in that duel.
But I do have a gif made of Palpatine wielding Anakin's lightsaber with a red blade, I'll post it.

Well here is the thing, you can see in this Cut Scene from ROTS, that Anakin is clearly standing next to palpatine, but if you look toward the back, you can see that Mace, Seasee Tin, and Kit Fisto are approaching the Chancellor.

Yes keep it in mint condition and it will accumulate in time. I own several figures that were either rares or mess ups and they tend to sell for quite a bit
