Ok, so if I was to buy SWG from the stores.. Would I be able to play it for free, for as long as I wish? Or would I need to pay a monthly fee..

'Aight, let me clear this...
Say you DO buy COA. Whenever the EMU is released, you install the game, but DO NOT subscribe, unless you also want to play by paying the monthly fee. Anyways, then, you install everything you need, step-by-step to play the EMU, and when it's done, tadah, surprise surprise, SWGEmu up and running!

Ok, but what's this EMU thing members keep mentioning?

EMU = Emulator
So, basically, they are "emulating" the game, but in a legal form, that can make us play the game in the Pre-CU era without paying.

Reyvan nailed it. But to just straight up play the game on the official SOE servers (Sony Online Entertainment), yes you need to pay the monthly fee, regardless of whether you buy the complete adventure or just Galaxies by itself. If you've played any other MMORPG before (Guild Wars doesn't count, and technically isn't truly MMO anyways, although it's close enough in my book) you should be fairly familiar with how the subscription system in Galaxies works. If not, I'll be glad to answer as many questions as I can, although I've not played Galaxies since sometime around launch.

Are there any free servers up though? Sorry about all these questions guys. I want to get this game since it's a star wars RPG. But I want to make sure I can play it for free with no fees or anything first.

There are currently no free servers sponsored by SOE, and unless someone is running a private server somewhere, the answer is no. If you want to play for free you'll just have to wait for the emu servers to go live.

That's still up in the air, and I don't want to wager a guess because if you've ever followed the mod scene you'd know that release dates rarely stick with them. They recently completed their first stress test and had 425 people online, so that's progress. One thing that worries me is that they still can't get combat in at all for the moment, or at least that's what I read. So yeah, seeing how combat is a pretty big part of Galaxies and they're still trying to implement it, I expect it's still quite a way off.
