That's the thing with Photoshop. It offers a ton of default tools and settings that are really good. But there are all these little tips and tricks to make the effect you're going for better.
Sort of like the drop shadow thing. You get a better effect from using multiple layers and bluring them than you can get with drop shadow. Same goes for the eraser and blending instead of using blur.
