People often cite the other two originals as their favorite films, but I like to point out that IV was setup, and VI had muppets (ewoks).
The darkest episode, V is my all time favorite, the battle of Hoth in particular.
Although the biggest reason is probably due to Mr. Lucas having the least involvement of the three. :-P

Ewoks were little people in costume.....not muppets........ROTJ was the best in my opinion.

ESB is , BY FAR , my favorite of the SW movies . yes it is the darkest , and the directing job by irvin kershner ( one of lucas' film school teacher ) is amazing . the duel beetwen vader and luke at the end and the revelation that follows being one of THE best scene ( my personal favorite ) of both trilogies . the battle of hoth was also incredible . ANH was definitely here to set up the whole universe and ROTJ still is one of my least favorite SW movies ( right after ep1 ) .

ESB is my favorite because it's so complete and balanced; it shows a little bit of everything. The romance between Han and Leia, the Good vs. The Bad (Rebel vs. Empire), and the Light vs. Dark.
On the other hand, RotS is second on my list because it's the bridge between PT and OT. It shows Anakin Skywalker's transformation from the selfless Jedi we know, to loving husband, to Sith Apprentice, and, ultimately, the half-machine-half-man Darth Vader.

"Empire" had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All "Jedi" had was a bunch of Muppets - DANTE HICKS

The battle on Hoth and the chase of teh Millenium Falcon through the asteroids being my favorite scenes. Kershner manages to bring teh characters more to life, so they are not overwhelmed by teh special effects backdrop. The difference between his and Lucas' directing is glaring.

Ewoks were little people in costume.....not muppets........ROTJ was the best in my opinion. A point of minor significance when you watch the film. These cuddly teddy bears have too prominent a role. Wookies woudl have been more credible. Stormtrooper vs midget in a bear suit? I would bet on stormtroopers every time. Stormtroopers defated almost all the Jedi, in "Revenge of the Sith," executing general order 66, and they can't handle midgets with sticks?

Whilst I have an enormous fondness for ANH, I have to admit that ESB was a more complete, and better produced movie. ANH was great because it introduced us to a whole new universe of characters, spacecraft, and weapons. It gave us our first glimpse of the lightsaber, the greatest sci-fi weapon ever. It also set the scene for the mythology of the Star Wars universe, and the adventures to come. However, ESB, thanks the Irvin Kershner, was a better produced and more rounded movie, with more character development and dramatic build up. The visual aspects of the film were more spectacular and for the first time, we visited several different worlds, with very different qualities. To top it all, the climax of the film, the 'Luke, I am your father' scene, has become an iconic scene that everyone knows, even non-Star Wars fans. The introduction of Yoda was pure genius, although he came about by default as he was originally supposed to be Obi-Wan. The Battle of Hoth scenes were absolutely awe-inspiring, and nothing like it had been seen on film before. ROTJ, by comparison, was a bit of a let down. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, it has some fantastic scenes. The Jabba's Palace scenes were what the Cantina scenes should have been in ANH, and the Assault on the Death Star was what the original Death Star Assault in ANH should have been, too. The final confrontation with Vader was thrilling, and the revelation that Vader could turn back to the light side of the force was a real surprise. However, as has already been mentioned, the Ewoks were just embarrassingly cute, and it was impossible to believe that they could be victorious over the stormtroopers, the same breed of soldiers who had slaughtered the Jedi. Maybe they were having a bad day, but you would think that the troops would have made rugs out of the little furballs. Also, after the way the clones sacked Kashyyk and made slaves of the Wookies, it would have been good if they had a chance to have their revenge.

esb's my favorite too...at least half of it. The hoth part is awesome, but the dagobah part drags a bit.

ESB is my favorite as well for many of the reasons previously stated. For me though, the introduction of Yoda, Luke leaving against Yoda and Obi-Wan's wishes and Lukes confrontation with Vader on Bespin were my favorite parts. I only wish Kershner has worked more with Lucas on ROTJ.

While ESB isn't my fave Star Wars movie, I do think that hands down, it had the best lightsaber fight of any of the movies. Including the prequels.

Episode V is my favorite movie in History! not just Star Wars.
I think Hoth and the Asteroid Field alone are enough to love this movie, but then you have all the character development and the Saber Battle on Bespin.
Lando did the right thing! He had to think of his people not just what he wanted.
oh, and Lucas bashing is lame

As a child, Empire was my favorite of the Original Trilogy. I was obsessed with AT-AT's and Snowspeeders. I also think that when Vader revealed that he was Luke's father, it blew everyone's minds including my own! This was the film that introduced us to Master Yoda. I really loved this one as a kid. I still do. I like ROTJ better only for one reason. Because it was a great end to an awesome trilogy and because Vader became good again. When it comes to machines and ships, Empire takes the prize, in my opinion.

I would agree with this comment myself. though I look forward to the Live action series that connects EPIII and EPIV.......

Revenge of the Sith was my favorite because you see Darth Vader as a weak minded fool who listened to his enemy Darth Sidious. We also know that he will eventually cause the Rebellion to win the Battle of Endor and bring an end to the tyrannical Empire! He is ultimately haunted by his murder of Padme and therefore, we can all understand why he is in such pain! ROTJ had a great ending but the music at the end was abissmal compared to all of the other Star Wars Episodes! And for your info, Luke and Anakin both had their hands cut off by a villain. The tragedy of Darth Vader is that he becomes his own worst enemy! He doesn't realize he has ended the life of his wife and that she has died from a broken heart. He also does not know his daughter or son! ~~~DarthOdious~~~~~~
