Hi lads,
Just recieved my Darth Maul FFX dual saber. I've only unpacked one of them for now and tested it, and as my feeling is somewhat different from what I've seen on some others review, here's a quick sum up of my first feelings on this saber :
- Up to now I only had a Yoda FFX, which is well known to be one of the brightest FFX around (if not the brightest one). Compared to Yoda's, Maul's FFX looks dim one turned on, I must admit. Maybe I should consider buying some Duracell Ultra AAA and compare, though. Also maybe the eye naturally sees green brighter than red as well.
- The blade of the Maul being longer than Yoda's (well ANY FFX being longer than Yoda's), I can clearly see "spots" along the blade between the leds. Then again, that might just be my batteries (even if brand new).
- The blade IS thicker than expected. That's greate, not only because it is thus more robust (for duelling), but it also gives more balance to the saber. Yoda is not so nice for spinning because the blade is so light that it's hard to find a proper way to hold it.
- About balance, the weight of the hilt is perfect, even with batteries, specially since it's an heavy hilt but the batteries are only 3 AAA so it's not adding too much to the hilt, and since the blade is heavier as well, the balance is really perfect for spinning. Note that I am only speaking of the battle damaged model for now.
- About the buttons. I've seen several comments about the knobs on Maul's hilt, that are annoying for spinning etc. Well, I guess I have normal hands, and I'm holding the saber right hand just under the blade (top of the hilt), between the blade and the switch knob (fits perfectly), and left hand between the 2nd and 3rd knobs (first perfectly as well). The position of the right hand is the same for spinning and the knobs never disturb, I even barely touch them. Then again, this is just a matter of hand size, but unless you have big hands, this shouldn't be a problem.
- The switch on button, as you already know, is to be turned, not pushed. I think there is a way to turn it on with only one hand, I haven't tried yet, but at least this is a cool feature even with two hands, it really looks like you're turning a real saber on. Compare to the Yoda, the knob of the Yoda is far more annoying than the Maul's, as Yoda's knob is taking so much space on the hilt, with the knob's cover around on almost one 3rd of the hilt in length... Maul's perfect on that point.
As soon as I have tested the two sabers joint in one, I'll let you know
