On lightsabers without that rectangle thing a.k.a. my Darth Maul lightsaber, you have to TWIST the button, I'm pretty sure you don't really twist them. I'm pretty sure you don't push a big rectangle up too!

What's your question here ? On my maul, you have to turn the button by, say 20 degres right to have the blade on.

My question is why do you have to twist the buttons? In the movies you're supposed to push them right?

The movies showed us very few lightsabers, the EU shows us a great deal more about them (obviously). The activation buttons were specific to the creator, though the common one was a button to press.
In this case, though, it was probably to prevent accidental shutdown while showing off.

Truth to tell, watch Darth Maul swithing on the 2nd blade of his dual lightsaber when facing obiwan and qui gon : he's not pushing/twisting anything. I think most jedi/sith simple use the force (telekynesis) to switch their light saber on. Can't you ?

Just a push button would never work with such spins as the windmill or say the Maul over the head behind the back spin. Trust me, I own 2 doubles and a single Maul. The buttons constantly get caught on your hands and it's impossible to grip the saber exactly the same everytime when you really get it going.
Personally I love the twist action and it's actually my favorite activation switch I've seen. I have all the different MR activation switches and most I have problems with.
Besides many lightsabers can only be activated using the force. So I don't have a problem with whether it's a visible or hidden switch or button.
