i believe it was the Tree of Insight. Like Yoda said"Strong with the Darkside that place is. In you must go." Yet is is not Yoda. In fact Luke's fears to turn into a villian are confronted. That is why Luke see his face in the helmet. So his internal conflict with the Force is confronted. This is when he truly conquers his fear. That is why Vader says"Good you have overcome your fear. Now release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me." So the intial Training must be very similar first you must master yourself. Much like Kung Fu. This is my opinion on this. I don't presume to have all the ansers I just have studied ESB much as it is my favorite movie ever! ;D

Dark Side cave. The backstory is ambiguously canon: The Jedi Minch [same species as Yoda] defeated a Bpfasshi Dark Jedi in the cave, and the cave absorbed the Bpfasshi's dark energies. Yoda realized that living near the cave would 'negate' his light side presence in the Force.
The dark energies in the cave gave birth to the illusion, and when Luke supposedly dipped into them, he was shown what would happen if he surrendered to the dark side.
Later, he returned to the cave, and has sent various people there for training and whatnot.

Yikes, so that's what happened.... I didn't even know they were in a cave. It seemed like more of a deep swamp or something. I wish they'd make movies or at least cartoons based on all the Star Wars stories beyond the trilogies.

In the clone wars you see another tree of insight. Anakin is with Quigon and his is told he must enter. Very similar and the same idea. Facing the mirror something they also mention in the original CW cartoons. When they speak of knighting Ani-"Facing the mirror"

Luke saw what the future had in store for him if he chose the dark path. He was basically fighting his fears.

Yeah kind of. Luke was afraid of the possibility of becoming as evil as Darth Vader that's why he saw himself in the helmet.
