its a leftover battery pack from the previous generation of sabers. the EL sabers required more power, and they used a battery pack with 6 batteries; the first few models of LED sabers simply used the same battery pack, because it was convenient for production. -======- LED sabers require less power than EL and, yes, they can run off 4 batteries instead of 6; if you insert 4 batteries, the saber will ignite, but it will not last as long before the batteries die. --> the 6-battery pack gives the LED saber a longer "run-time" before you need to change batteries. -======- in all, there were five models of LED saber which used the 6-battery-pack: the 2003 vader ANH; both mace windu's; luke ESB; and the luke ROTJ. the rest all used 3xAA packs, with the exception of yoda and maul, which used 3xAAA. (maul has a VERY short run-time, being a full-sized saber with the tiny "AAA" batteries). -======- the new HASBRO obiwan FX (also) uses 3xAAA batteries.

This is probably the best saber all round IMHO. Well done on your purchase.
