Personally, I don't enjoy the forcefx light sabers for dueling practice. I am from the school of padded pvc sabers. When sparring, we use lacrosse gloves. They have superior grip, and padded backs of the hands, which really helps to keep fingers from breaking when you're playing around with sparring weapons capable of doing some real damage if you're not careful. The only issue is that the lacrosse gloves definitely tend to be a little more expensive. I would say they're worth it if you plan on full contact saber play.

personally, I never use force-fx sabers for practice, I use dowel rods with some sort of handle, usually about 11 inches of electric tubing, and I've dueled for years, but I don't use gloves often, BUT when I do, mostly when I'm fighting someone who needs to work on control, I wear fingerless biking gloves, they help, the grip is good, and it keeps you form getting cut open, but that's just me...
Edit: Personally, as well, I don't like wearing gloves, due to the fact that they limit the ability to control the saber, I find some spins that are elementary get messed up by wearing gloves... Of course, some people do find it easier with them, I don't know, but, then again, I'm not too bright, I usually fight full-contact, very few rules but no headshots and no groinshots, but most everyone I duel with has a high pain tolerance and knows when to quit...

I got me a pair of batting gloves and they work awsome. Make sure they are tight on your hands though.

I don't duel much, but you're right, gloves do help! I use a pair of old batting gloves.

I got a quick question for anyone. I just bought an Obi-wan ROTS FFX. Does it irritate the hands? Or would I be fine without gloves?
Thanks and MTFBWY, DPK

i personally do well with a pair of paintball gloves i use proto brand which is a brand under one of the best it is a small sb division of them. or for the paintballers out there of dye. paintballers cut the fingers off either the first fore knuckles or all fingers up to the knucle. this provides quicker movement of the fingers for shooting but i find it useful for spins and dueling as well since they have padding on the top of the palm and the knuckles. they fit nicely and run about 20$. over all a very good buy. any paintball retailer should be able to order them for you for no fee.

I might not put it down LOL. Darth Plo Koon, No you should not need gloves. Generally gloves aren't needed for spinning/dueling with the FXs. In fact certain spins are harder with gloves. It's more of a costume thing that helps in setting that "I'm one bad*** Jedi!" taking on the whole Galactic Empire mode. So they're not actually necessary. I had previously written:"I generally prefer wearing them. Really it's whatever it takes to get you in that Star Wars feeling, for me it's an FX with gloves." This was when I just messed around with my sabers...simple tricks and spins nothing extraordinary. Well after practicing 20-45 min. 5+ days a week for over a month, I haven't worn them since. With spinning the sabers very fast, I don't want extra grip when I'm trying to release/re-grip the saber faster than I can think about it (training kicks in at this point). I'm actually holding the sabers looser for more movement and speed. I allow the sabers momentum to keep them in the right position. I actually loose some control with wearing gloves, weird I know, but it's true because they can give me more grip than I want unexpectedly breaking the rhythm I'm in. This makes the sabers spin at a slightly different angle and this keeps increasing with each revolution. When you're going to want gloves is for extended spin sessions in the cold (40 degrees). Also unless you're an expert like Ray Park, gloves are an absolute must have for Maul's saberstaff with its extra knobs. A couple days ago I went all out in spinning my Maul, and before I was done my hands were bright red and bleeding(no lie) from where the knobs had caught on my hand. But this is only if you go crazy fast like I did. At slower speeds the saberstaff will only irritate your hands at worst. *Note: I don't have sensitive hands. They are rough and calloused from all the outside work I do.

my gloves i use when neccesary if you can see, these gloves are rather snug so they dont cause etxra room in between the saber and your hand. the only loose part is the fingers which allow you to spin etc without much problems. just something i prefer.

And not feeling like buying better designed gloves and just loosing too much of the feeling with the gloves I have now, I decided to just tape my fingers where the last time I had been cut. Guess what? It worked incredibly!!! No cuts, no scraped fingers, no nothing! I was able to spin the Maul as fast as I could without hurting my hands. Now I don't know if this will work for everybody, but for me just taping up the problem areas on the hands solved it perfectly. Try it and then tell me how it works for you.

I think gloves would depend on what you want to protect yourself from; for spinning I would use very thin gloves if at all, however for dueling practice I would look for something a bit more substantial like the paintball gloves shown although i'd want full finger protection!
Me and my son were dueling a few nights back and we clashed a little hard sending his tip flying off, not wanting to interupt a what had a been a very good session (just need that vid camera working now!) we carried on until I got caught by the tip of his poly tube just below my finger nail.
All i can say is that i think i'd rather have had a real saber strike as at least it would have cortorised the wound lol! It bled and bled for ages and hurt like a !

Gloves, nope don't need them, I already have tough hands so using them I think wouldn't feel right, I like to feel the hilt from where I'm spinning, plus it makes it harder to do finger spins like the ones that banditjedi does. Sometimes I cut myself while spinning but it heals fast so I'm not worried, that's just what I feel about having gloves for dueling.
