i have heard in the books that luke has a son named ben now there are a few questions
1) is luke a grand jedi master at the end of the books or is there a highr ranking htat i am not sure of
2)is ben stronger than luke when he hits the age of 10?
3) who is luke's wife?
4) han and leia have kids what are names?

I think I can answer to the best of my ability (though I never read those books). I'm looking at the Wookieepedia site right now:
1.) Grand Master is the highest Jedi title.
2.) I don't know. I've never read the books, but I'll try to find some info later.
3.) Luke's wife's name is Mara Jade. She used to be the Emperor's Hand & is now a Jedi Master.
4.) As far as I know, the names are Jacen, Jaina, & Anakin (all are Jedi) Solo. Anakin was killed, the rest survived.

As far as Ben Skywalker goes...it is clear that he is very stong in the force. However events during the war with the yuuzhan vong caused so much death that Ben completely cut himself off from the force (as he could likely feel all of the deaths taking place in the universe when he was an infant) so we really don't know what the extent of his powers are. Jacen (Han's and Leia's son) is training Ben currently but Jacen is either going insane or already is insane and may or may not have joined the darkside. A surviving dark lord, Lumiya may be using Jacen to get to Ben but none of this is clear just yet as the current series of novels is following this.
Yeah...Chewbacca does indeed die but at least he dies well. Anakin Solo died as well as previously stated. Both died in the war with the yuuzhan vong.
Many characters that were seen in the movies are also dead at this point including (just what I can remember off the top of my head):
Mon Mothma
Crix Nadine
Ackbar
Also, just to mention... Boba Fett is alive and well =)

Poor Chewie...
*Sniffles* I cried my heart out when he died and when I tell people about it, I start crying again cause...I mean it is pretty radical at what it took to kill him. I also cried when Little Solo died. I really really cried. I mean, I felt Leia's pain and God it was horrible.
But yeah, they covered everything. Though I do bbelieve that Luke and Mara suspect that Ben is rather strong in the Force because of all the death during the Vong war resulting in him closing himself off. And poor poor Jacen... And Jaina... And oh my God! Poor Han and Leia.

Jacen, when he gets back from his trek for knowledge, takes Ben as his unofficial Padawan, even though he's technically not a Jedi anymore. Jacen eventually is approached by Lumiya, who is surviving, and turns Sith, supposedly so that Luke lives. Ben is still his apprentice, and is being dragged down the path, unbeknownst to him. |

Luke made him self the official head of the order during the dark nest trilogy. He does not take the title of Jedi Grand Master in the dramatis Personai at the beginning of the book it was just given to him.
In my opinion Yes Ben is stronger that luke was simplay luke did not know he could use the force.
Mara Jade is Luke Skywalker's wife.
Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin. Anakin dies in the book Star by Star.
