fo real it would rock.....i did research and they can make it.....the problem is containing the beam.....we aint that far advanced yet, but one day we will be!!!! i bet aliens know how to make 1 LMAO I know this is farther back in the thread but as i was reading through i thought i could add my 2 sense. From my being lazy and sitting around all day applying my mind to useless thoughts while i wait to ship off to boot camp i came to the idea of a possible way to contain the plasma it just a beginning thought though please add your input. Ok the possible but maybe not probable way to contain the plasma is to have a conduit run up the center of the blade sorrounded by the plamsa, course it would have to be a material that is plasma retardent, (my only prob with this idea) anyway at the top of the plasma sorrouned conduit have an endcap, so to speak, to stop the plasma flow (stop or cycle) and create your lightsaber

Wouldn't the material that is plasma retardant be a problem? You'd have to know exactly what material you're using.

Fights each other with real energy blades? And what slice your friends head off? Get real here. Look i too want a real lightsaber but I'm working on physics and guess what? no matter how much energy is required, you need to harness it then control so it doesn't come out the bottom!

ronok has got a point about harnessing the energy and then being able to control that energy with out it spilling out and being a mess or the lightsaber would be no good to use.

Thank you for agreeing with me! I have this argument at school everyday with my teacher! It is like getting water from a stone!

And also if you could use a crystal to make a beam, you still must contain it for it to be an actual lightsaber. So the chance of us making a lightsaber is very slim. I'm just saying this because it's the truth and you all know it. I did a lot of research and although the energy output is incredible the only problem is containing it and manipulating it. Remember what has been said before and read it again and again and understand what I'm saying.

Well, anything is possible, I guess.
I don't think sabers will ever be real, but it's fun to only imagine.

Don't forget the word "light" everyone. Light travels on and on and on without an end unless it hits something. So if we had a lightsaber that light would be going on and on and on without an end. But if there was a way to fix that that would be really sweet to have a lightsaber. Finally and I get the chance to hurt the ones that bullied me LOL!

Finally someone who wants to hurt those who hurt them. I'm with you 100% mate, I have to put up with this stuff for nine years. I'd go home with a broken arm, leg or nose. And definately a black eye. I would love to slice and dice them and show them whose boss. So yeah I'd back you up man!

Please bear with me here. I have to explain HOW it'll work before I explain the WHY.
All matter is surrounded by a kind of cloud of electrons. Everything you see and touch is made of atoms consisting of a certain number of protons, neutrons and electrons, depending on the structure of the atom. Electrons surrounding the atoms are all negatively charged, and repel each other. My fingers are typing on this keyboard with success because the electrons of my fingers are resisting the electrons of the keyboard.
What if the electrons in this keyboard were surrounded by positively charged electrons -called positrons? My fingers would pass through the keyboard, and the atoms would be sheared away from my fingers into particles of atomic dust. Ouch!
NOW...
According to the canon of the lightsabre, it hums, emits light, cuts through anything except blaster fire and another lightsabre, and generates no heat whatsoever.
Let's look at the cutting aspect first. What can cut through anything? Well, if all matter is surrounded by negatively charged electrons, then positrons would be the ideal means of achieving this.
So, the lightsabre blade is not light, not plasma, and not energy. It couldn't be because those kinds of blades would simply pass through each other, rendering any kind of fencing defense meaningless. A positron blade would, however, stop ANOTHER positron blade. It would cut through anything else surrounded by electrons (All forms of matter) with ease.
The rest is a bit on the theoretical side, but here goes: It would glow due to the positrons shearing the atoms in the air when activated, generating photons of light in a very intense manner. The humming sound would be the sound of this, as you move the blade in the air at a higher speed, the humming sound escalates in tone because the atoms are sheared faster.
They have the ability to control electrons in flight, and it happens naturally (Lightning). What the blade would consist of in the most basic terms would be an arched stream of something called, "Anti-Lightning."
Anyhoo, that's my thoughts on the subject.
Someday, someone's going to come up with this at first as a replacement device to, "The Jaws of Life," and use it to clear and cut rubble to pull survivors from wreckage quickly. Then, it'll be used in military applications. Once the technology becomes public, it wouldn't be long before they're made by ordinary folks for all sorts of uses. It wouldn't be any different from the firearm as if everyone has one, who would risk getting killed? In other words, how many gun shops get robbed?
