that's a excellent theory, and It sound like it's theoretically possible. I'd love to see this become true.

Lightsaber blades emit energy and heat when they intercept something. Qui Gon literally melted through the blast doors in EP1, both the glowing edges and the books tell us that. There are numerous other cases where heat is shown to emit from lightsaber blades as well.
I'll admit that I don't know much about atomic structures, though, so the rest of it I can't say anything on.

[glow=red,8,300] The only thing I will add to all of this is that without the focusing crystal and the abilities of a Jedi or a Sith...a lightsaber would be useless...
You never see non-Force users running around with lightsabers so yeah...unless someone figures out how to bend the laws of physics...we'll just have to pretend...

There are a few ( very few) non-Force users who have created lightsabers. The hard part of creating the lightsaber is that the crystals have to be tuned just right, without that it blows up. If you're lucky, you can get very close to perfect tuning with standard Star Wars instruments, but the blades are generally weak.

heat couldn't possibly emit from a lightsaber blade. if it did, no one would be able to hold them.
the reason you see things glowing is because once the blade comes into contact with something, there is an unbelievable amount of energy being released in several forms (light, sound and movement which causes heat)
if there were a release of energy from a lightsaber, then there would be a resulting constant amount of heat being released as well. and with the amount of energy we're talking about, the air surrounding the lightsaber would be so hot, that no human could be near it without death.
when they touch things, yes there is heat being released and absorbed by whatever the blade touches. in these instances, yes it would get very hot nearby from the heat coming off of whatever was being touched. but probably not enough to ward off a person.
and before anybody brings it up. yes the blade would be in contact with air constantly, so yes it should be giving off energy in that way, but i think thats probably what results in the sound and light. solids would have enough densely packed molecules that there would be enough energy to create heat.

[glow=red,8,300]Hey Guys!
I think this thread is probably pretty much resting in peace but I would like to say that when Star Wars was created it wasn't based on Science or Facts or Laws of the Universe. It is fiction.
So, while I'd love to have a real lightsaber, what I'd love to have even MORE is the FORCE...which would make it possible to do so many more things than just wield a weapon. I could sense danger, move out of its way and with the motion of my finger bring the danger to a CHOKING halt...LOL
Scientists will never be able to create the force...or lightsabers...that is what our imagination is for. It is to help us escape our reality and entertain us.
May the force be with us all!

;)Well the biggest problem isn't generating a laser powerful enough to cut through almost anything. We can already do that, we just have to make it smaller and last longer. But the biggest problem is making the beam stop at 1 meter. I don't think that it is physically possible to make a light beam stop, unless you fire it through Bose-Einstine condensate. It will be slowed, even frozen if it's good enough, but thiat material exists only near absolute zero, which makes it useless. Besides, if it is frozen in the material, how are you going to swing it around, even if it didn't vaporize?
