Go to Google
Type in Photoshop Tutorial
Then what you are looking for i.e. Light saber, or rotoscoping, or something like that. I guarantee you will find several and just pick the one you like the best. I'm sure there are some on here too.

Ok in every tutorial I've seen, they use a polygonal laso tool, all I have is just a plain laso tool which is impossible to make a straight line with. Where is this polygonal laso tool?

That's the lasso tool they are refering too. If you hold down shift as you make each selection point it will be straight.
You should try using the pen tool though it's much easier. Just click at each point you want to set your selection then when you complete the selection right click and choose make selection but don't use any feather.
Once you've done that you will need to round the tip.
If you use the feather option you will need to experiment (make your selection several times) to figure out what the right roundness is. This could take a while.

I use photoshop 7 and Ryan Wieber's lightsaber video tutorial works well. Though you may want to play with the Gaussian Blur settings. If you follow him to the letter, the color seems pale (at least to me). Again, for sabers, this should do nicely. It's the second one on this page. (He used a mac, but I figured it out...) theforce.net/fanfilms/postproduction/sabres/sabertutorials.asp
