I was watching Episode I the other night on HBO. During the scene in which Darth Maul becomes "mini" Darth Maul, I think Lucas really botched his death. Watching the scene closely, you see Darth Maul looking down at Obi-Wan, with his lightsaber lit, when Obi-Wan leaps up out of the shaft. You can see Maul watch Obi-Wan leap over his head, and he has time to turn around completely before Obi-Wan catches the lightsaber and cuts him in half.
In that split second, don't you think that someone trained in the Sith arts would have raised his lightsaber for a block, instead of leaving it lit, pointed down to the ground?
I think Lucas purposely did this so that he wouldn't have to put in any more fighting scenes...but 70 minutes of pod racing was ok.
That might be why fans of Maul have such an issue with his death. If he and Obi-Wan would have fought for another 30 seconds, with the same result, at least there would be some closure.
Not to worry, tho...I'm sure he won't do it again (Padme, Mace, Boba Fett excluded).

I totally agree with you,the podrace idea was a joke.It was just a rehashed version of the speederbike chase in Ep VI.Was that the best writing GL could do?! Show how young Anakin was the "Chosen One" by winning a podrace?!
Darth Maul was one of the most mysterious and kick-ass characters GL had written since Darth Vader and he wrote a death scene that had Maul go out like a punk.

I agree Obi-Wan should have been lunch meat; but then who would have trained Anakin and helped Luke?

You have a valad point. The sl of Star Wars needed Maul's death, but not like that. It should have been longer and the pod race less. I also noticed a feint spray of blood when he is cut in half. Bad editing in his death as well.

[glow=red,2,300]I agree with you all. For how quickly he showed up for a real fight. He was dispersed just as fast. Jar Jar and the podrace total space taker. But Maul will live on because we make him live on.[/glow]

Bad editing in his death as well. I agree that Maul may have been killed a little "too easily" But then again, I understand why more time was dedicated to the pod race. The movie is suppose to focus on Anakin and his achievements, not Maul.

I have also noticed the blood spray when he is cut in half. That is weird as a lightsaber blade is so hot it would cautorise the wound. I dont know what George was thinking with that, it just wasnt needed at all in my opinion.

I felt like that battle was to short as well, but it was about anakin and his path, Maul was just a pawn in the story and in the mind of the emperor. I don't think sidious actuallyexpected him to win the battle, just cause a little more pain in Anakins life.
The who blood thing shocked me as well. I think that is the first time we saw that and the only time. If I remember correctly, in EpIII where anakin lost three limbs there was no spray of blood.

Honestly, Maul should have never fallen to a PATHETIC WEAK UNSKILLED PADAWAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont care if it has to be with the story. GL rewrites stuff all the time. and edits movies and adds new stuff in.
Blood pressure done went up again, dang.

yeah man i agree, i thought Darth Maul was the coolest guy ever and you'd think he was better then that, if they cut down on the races and made that fight longer and if he would died a little better then it would of been ok but his death was disappointing.

I agree. How does a battle like that end up in such a way?I mean the skill maul finally proved in that fight against two jedi was amazing. When i first saw that movie my jaw droped so far when i saw his death.I mean George is a master mind no doubt. But how could he come up with such a weak efforted kill?Wow...just wow.

In my opinion,Maul shouldn't have been killed in the first place. Clearly,he was the coolest thing about Episode 1. His image was pretty much everywhere. The 4-6 trilogy had mainly Darth Vader as a the villain. I would have liked Darth Maul to be the villain in this new trilogy. Then, have an awesome duel between him and Anakin in Episode 3,setting the stage for Anakin to take Maul's place at the Emperor's side.

Jar Jar is not a space taker he is pretty much the animated comic relief of the movie and the pod race should have been abit shorter darth mauls death was needed and he didnt lift his saber cause he was probly in shock at a padawan like obi actualy survived and did not lose his grip and fall down the shaft every thing good now?
