in every star wars movie it has the usual sentence at the start of the movie. "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..."
Yeah well, I think that they should change it to "A long time ago, but somehow in the future..."

It would be possible for it to take place long ago. I mean, in a galaxy far far away. It's not judging by Earth's technology, or timeline.

It is a theory that technology civilizations and time go in circles. So with time there is a rise and a golden age, The dark ages could come and the light of technology could burn out.
But it is also many other things are there in the statement as well. Once point is that the Force is universal and so is the place. They are not in this universe of timeline of earth. So it helps the movie and the idea of the force not to get pulled into religion.
So there are many reason for it, and it something you can wrap your head around. I mean look at it this way, When you can decypher and analyze the first sentence of the movie. It shows you what the many layers of the starwars saga are what make it so fun to study and watch! ;D
