I am some what of a star wars purist. When i started reading the books. (and I have read them all) I started with heir to the empire trilogy very good books not alot of saber fights but they are good stories. Or you could just start at the beginning. Darth Bane Path of Destruction. start at either of those. The heir to the empire trilogy starts 5 years after Return of the jedi and path of destruction is the earliest book and is about 1000 years before Phantom menace.
Reply back if you have any questions.

I've only read one book myself. It's called "Splinter Of The Minds' Eye". It was written by Alan Dean Foster. It was published back in 1978 before EpV was even released so, Luke is still learning how to use the Force and he doesn't know that Leia is his sister. There aren't that many saber duels but, it's a good story.
I'd like to read more books myself.
